Canadian Arts Jobs – 07/26/12

July 26, 2012 in Jobs by Desirée Ossandon

Hello!

I asked two question over the last couple of days (here & here) and got a great response.

Check them out:

.

What is the role of art? Is it different than the role of the artist?

“The role of art is to exist. Challenge, question, support, beautify, testify, et cetera. Not even the artist can guarantee what it will be. Too many factors… Time, culture, politics, history; it’s all organic.” - Mat Calverley

“The role of art is to inspire, explore and illuminate the truth.” - Brittney Francis

“provoke fun, thought & interest. Without art, life would be dull. The role of the artist is to create & share with the world.” - Nav Sehambhi

“The role of art is to uplift people’s spirits. The role of the artist is to attain artistic perfection.” - LorraineHétuManifold

“‘protect the origins of language and culture’” - karhiio

.

What is the role of the artist?

“create a pathway to experience.” - dsharpdavis

“”The Role of the artist is to make their own stylized comment on the state of humanity”" - Natalia Knowlton

“the role of the artist is to suspend time, even if just for a moment.” - Jacqueline Woods

“the role of the artist is to evoke, invoke and provoke” - Bartlett Gallery

“the artist is there to express themselves through their art and allow others to relate” - Staverous Cardini

“…poke into the edges we haven’t gone into or dare not go into.” - Maggie Shirley

“The role of the artist is to fill in the blank.” - Peggy MacKinnon

“connect” - Appy Aparnski

(We had many, many more answers, so I couldn’t include them all in this post).

Do you agree/disagree with any of the above? Have thoughts of your own on the subject? Be sure to let us know in the comments below after you’ve taken a look at the awesome list of job opportunities I have for you today.

Have a wonderful day!

Desirée

How do you cool down when summer heats up?

Hello!

It’s been a hot summer so far, which can sometimes make work difficult. Brutal heat and humidity can equal stifling offices/sets/studios, cranky co-workers, and materials that refuse to set and dry.

How do you cope and work through the heat?

Have a wonderful day!

Desirée

  • Friday Night Live Party at the ROM May 17, 2013
Museum adventures after dark. Dancing with dinosaurs. Drinking cocktails among relics while being offered a tasting from a collection of pop-up snack bars. These may not seem like the typical night out, but in an attempt to make a museum space more accessible, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) has found a way to capture the […]

  • Book Review: a book of variations, by bpNichol May 14, 2013
Few Canadian poets have ever attained the level of reverence that bpNichol has earned. His creative output ranged from concrete poems and experimental fiction to small press ephemera and scripts for beloved kids’ shows Fraggle Rock and The Raccoons. While most readers are familiar with his most popular work, the nine-volume poetic epic The Martyrology (which […]

How Poetry Saved My Life is a memoir, a call to action and a celebration of poetry. It’s honest and heartbreaking, it’s funny and exciting and it leaves the reader in a loving place. What more could you want? But enough of this preamble. The goods are in the conversation. I was lucky enough to […]

By Terra Borody Shawney Cohen’s highly anticipated film The Manor kicked off the Hot Docs Festival at Bloor Cinema last Thursday night. The film paints a humble picture of Shawney’s personal life in Guelph, Ontario, where he helps with his family’s business: The Manor strip club and motel. The film begins something like a home video, […]
