Savage: Cult of Personality, Pure Media + The Art of Macho Madness opens on Saturday November 12 at White House Studios in Toronto at 7pm. In addition to visual art, videos, and song, the show will also feature a live dance performance and tribute to Randy “Macho Man” Savage.
Grant and Spooner have been working on their performance “MEGAPOWERS” which cribs its name from Savage and Hogan’s legendary tag team in the late 1980s.
“This performance is rooted in the glamour and spectacle of Randy Macho Man Savage. We use our bodies as the main site to remix Macho Man’s use of mask, persona, magic and enthusiasm. With the help of neti pots, salt piles, cast iron and spirit shields we turn the gallery into a portal for the past and future.”
Graduates of York University, the duo’s process includes talking on GCHAT and being together in empty spaces. Together they have performed at Harbourfront Centre, LadyFest, Nuit Blanche, XPACE Cultural Centre and the Festival of New Dance in St. John’s, Newfoundland. They have been artists-in-residence at Caldera Arts Centre in Oregon.
