Welcome to Canada Arts Connect’s new Editor, Chloe Vice!

December 14, 2011 in Articles by admin

The team at Canada Arts Connect would like to introduce you to our new Editor, Chloe Vice.

Chloe is a writer and editor, and is also the marketing director for Invisible Publishing. Her passion for the arts comes from her musical background, which included piano lessons from her mom and playing French Horn in youth orchestras. One of her favourite words is “embouchure”, a relic from brass class that has been ingrained in her brain since tweendom (although it’s a hard word to inject into everyday lingo). She currently owns a trumpet that is mostly for show, and sometimes has marching band envy.

We’re excited and happy to have Chloe on the team!

You can contact Chloe at ChloeV@CanadaArtsConnect.com.

WORKSHOP: VNB Fine Art Photo Workshops (Vancouver, British Columbia)

December 10, 2011 in Articles, Classes/Workshops, Featured by Ryan Drew Hayward

VNB Fine Art Photo Workshops are new Vancouver-based Photography workshops specializing in the teaching of Film Photography. We offer practical and affordable introductory training in every aspect of analog photography, while our intermediate and advanced workshops offer a great way to acquire new creative skills, get updated on contemporary practices, or gain valuable artistic insights on developing work.

Because our instructional formats allow for smaller groups, heightened attention is always paid to your projects and academic goals, ensuring clear focus and steady artistic growth. Our teaching philosophy reflects a broad humanistic understanding of the visual arts that encourages students to cultivate respectful viewpoints, articulate responsible meanings while challenging established formulas.

At VNB we like to think of all our workshops as collaborative in nature: a transforming place, where Photography’s permanent reinvention occurs image after image, photographer per photographer.

Current available workshops:

INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS
Basics of Photography 4-hour Crash Course (Sundays 1 – 5 pm)
Film Photography Foundations (Tuesdays 7 – 10 pm)
Photoshop Workflows for Photographers (Saturdays 10 am – 1 pm)

INTERMEDIATE WORKSHOPS

Fine Art Black and White Photography (Upcoming, April 2012)
Documentary Photography (Thursdays 7 – 10 pm)

ADVANCED WORKSHOPS

Staged Photography, The Narrative Tableau (Wednesdays 7 – 10 pm)
Environmental Portrait using Mixed Lighting (Upcoming, March 2012)

ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION sessions also available.

VNB represents the collaboration of photographers Virginie Lamarche and Bastien Desfriches Doria. After its initial Chicago launching, VNB is now operating in Vancouver, BC. Virginie and Bastien met in France – their home country – before jointly coming to the US to complete their MFAs in photography. As a couple they have been interacting for many years while working on their various respective fine art projects, first in school and later as academics. These common experiences allowed for the progressive building of a fluid aesthetic and photographic culture between them.

Virginie holds a Master (MST) in Photography and Multimedia from the University of Paris VIII, France and a MFA in Photography from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Her work has been exhibited in North America, Europe and Asia and has received various awards such as the KL Photo Awards 2010, Photo Espana Descubrimientos 09 and Flash Forward 08. Virginie has taught both traditional and digital photography classes as a lecturer at the University of Dayton, Ohio from 2006 to 2009. Shortly after, she created VNB Photo with Bastien.

Bastien received a BA and a MFA degree in Photography from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as well as two other university degrees from France in Information and Communication Sciences and Philosophy. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has won awards such as the London International Creative Competition 2010 and the Kuala Lumpur Photo Awards 2010. From 2006 to 2011, Bastien worked as an Assistant Professor of photography and digital imaging at Governors State University in Chicago’ south side. He has taught film photography and digital imaging courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
