January 11, 1974 – Dancer, choreographer, teacher, and founder of the National Ballet of Canada Celia Franca retires after serving as the artistic director for 24 years.

Franca was also the founder of the National Ballet School of Canada, Co-Artistic Director of The School of Dance, and was an Officer of the Order of Canada who was later promoted to Companion.
