open books

Years ago, a co-worker took at peek at the book I was reading during my lunch-break and asked what I thought of it. “It’s good,” I replied. “Of course, I’ve read it at least five times, so I already know it’s good.” I held up the copy of my book to show him how worn it was from the multiple readings.

“Why would you re-read it if you already know how it’s going to end?” He couldn’t understand any of the reasons I gave him and eventually I tried, “It’s the same as watching a movie you love over and over again.” He replied with a blank stare.

I know I’m not the only one who likes to indulge in old favourites (perhaps many times over). So my question today is…

What book(s) do you re-read?

I’d love to hear your answers in the comments below after you check out the great list of job opportunities I have for you.

Have a wonderful day!

  1. Oh, I LOVE to re-read books! But I’m also the kind of person that loves to know an ending to a movie or book before I watch it. No suspense necessary for me to enjoy a great story. Some of my favourites include We the Living by Ayn Rand (the most worn book I have!), 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (the story is so strange and fantastical it feels new every time!) and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens – a classic!

  2. The one book I love to re-read: Agatha Christie, “And Then There Were None”

  3. I have re-read A Tree Grows In Brooklyn easily 10-12 times!

  4. I’ve read The Handless Maiden about 4 times.

  5. I have read and re-read Kerouac’s On the Road and the Chronicles of Narnia many a time.

  6. Same as Julie – And Then There Were None is absolutely worth the re-read! As is Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, Bryson’s Short History of Nearly Everything, and any of Pratchett’s Discworld books.

  7. I’ve read The Chronicles of Narnia (all 7 books) every 2 yrs since I was 18. They inspire me to be a better person.

  8. I think I’ve read “The Day of the Triffids” at least five times. It’s an old book but it still feels current.

  9. Stacey…is Day of the Triffids about man-eating plants? There is actually a movie on tv tonight at 9 called Day of the Triffids.

  10. I had a teacher in high school who really left a mark on me. She assigned us “The Outsider” by Albert Camus and said that it was a book she read once a year. My favourite book to re-read is another from her English class: “Siddhartha” by Herman Hesse.

  11. I read a lot of Buddhist material, beat writers, and anythung Russian, I’ve read War & peace twice.
